What is the BRBA?
The Buy Recycled Business Alliance (BRBA) is a non-profit alliance of businesses united by a commitment to promote the
purchase and use of recycled content products (RCPs) and materials.
We deliver a range of programs, activities and services designed to help our members increase their RCP take-up and
secure a range of business benefits; and work closely with Australian business, government and the community at large
to promote initiatives and public policy frameworks which promote and support the "buy recycled" concept and through that
expand the understanding of sustainability in the community.
Our sponsors include leading companies such as Amcor Australasia, Australian Paper, Corporate Express,
Fosters Group, Fuji Xerox, McDonald's and Visy Industries, placing the BRBA in a unique position to provide a national
focus for market development of recycled content products.
The BRBA believes that:
- Recycling is an important contributor to business sustainability
- Recycling delivers tangible business benefits and is a commonsense and strategic response to the
need for business to be more resource efficient
- Businesses are not recycling unless they "buy recycled"
- To truly recycle, business must purchase those materials that have been collected and reprocessed into
other products
- "Buying recycled" is the critical step in the recycling loop
- The economics of the recycling system do not work unless "buying recycled" is driving demand for RCPs
- "Closing the recycling loop" by driving demand for RCPs is pivotal to creating a successful Australian
recycling market
- The BRBA will increase RCP take-up by harnessing the purchasing power of BRBA members ($30 billion p.a.)
to "buy recycled"
3 Year Business Plan 2006-2009
The BRBA's 3 Year Business Plan for 2006-09 outlines our key objectives over the next few years.
Key aspects of the plan include:
- Redevelopment of our Coach Program to take into account the increasing sophistication
of the environmental and sustainability systems within business;
- Continued support of the National Packaging Covenant as a signatory and through the provision of hands-on assistance
for our members implementing action plans;
- Development of an online National Database of Recycled Content Products to facilitate the wider uptake of recycled
content products within the community. This currently has funding support from the majority of state governments and the
Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage;
- Broadening our sphere of activities to encompass an extended education role and interaction with various levels of
government in regard to policies affecting market development of RCPs; and
- Working with key organisations to support a recycled content product logo for products and packaging.
